Contact The Police

Immediately phone the police to file a report with your local law enforcement. If your identity was stolen when you were away from your home, you may need to contact the police authorities in that particular jurisdiction as well. Opening a police case accomplishes two important things:

  • First, the police can start investigating the crime immediately.
  • Second, you will need information from the police report to help you straighten up your credit and accounts after the crime.

When you talk to the police, make sure you get the police report number and contact information on how to reach the investigator. Give this information to all the companies you get in touch with in getting your credit cleared up after the crime.

Security Tip:

When travelling, leave your checkbook at home. In addition to fraudulently using your checks, an identity thief can easily order new checks and have them mailed to an address other than your own.
