If You Become A Victim...

There are many steps you can and should take to protect yourself if you are a victim of identity theft. These steps are listed on the following pages...

Documenting Your Actions

Start documenting the time and money you spend on straightening out identity theft. In some countries, any person found guilty of financial identity theft can be ordered to pay restitution to the victim for any financial loss, including lost wages and related legal expenses.

Contact The Police

Immediately phone the police to file a report with your local law enforcement. If your identity was stolen when you were away from your home, you may need to contact the police authorities in that particular jurisdiction as well.

Credit Bureaus

After you inform the police, contact the credit bureaus. Next, contact any credit card companies and associated banks where your accounts may be at risk.

Security Tip:

When travelling, leave your checkbook at home. In addition to fraudulently using your checks, an identity thief can easily order new checks and have them mailed to an address other than your own.
